City of Bend, OR.

Activating a growing city.

When a city is projected to grow 40% by the year 2030, how do you bring city planners, politicians, special interests and the public together to deal with the multitude of issues that arise from such rapid growth? The MOVE BEND coalition was started as an initiative by Bend 2030 and was tasked with creating a digital hub that would engage businesses and residents of all backgrounds and viewpoints to help keep what’s special about Bend even as they grow.

Moving forward as a community.

MOVE BEND needed a partner to develop creative and measurable ways to drive public awareness and engagement around how to respond to their growing problems. As the Executive Creative Director at Fort West, I led our team in the effort to educate and engage the public using visual and visceral methods to communicate a vision for long-term growth that would invite stakeholder participation across the community.

Global thinking for local impact.

City officials and MOVE BEND recognized that the best cities in the world are finding ways to link their forward-thinking innovations through smart technology that reduces congestion and costs, increasing quality of life for all. They wanted to apply the same approach to their communications as a means to educate and activate the public. We designed a solution that engaged users every step of the way, creating clear visual cues with interactivity that made them feel like they were already a part of the process.

Collaboration for creativity.

Leveraging a vector based street map of the municipal region of Bend, we applied layers of interactivity and perspective that aided MOVE BEND in communicating the anticipated impacts of various aspects of population growth on multiple modes of transportation across the city. The addition of hotspots on these maps allows users to easily dive deeper to explore specific issues in their neighborhood. This, in turn, encourages discussion and debate over how to respond to the growth issues that are extremely relevant to their day-to-day routine.

Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service. The iMac is not just the color or translucence or the shape of the shell. The essence of the iMac is to be the finest possible consumer computer in which each element plays together.

A website in a singe-page experience.

The site was built as a single page application (SPA). Rather than having traditional page loads, the content was dynamically injected into the page using loading effects and transitions. The site had a stacked fly-out navigation and layers in new pages as one moves through the menu. The overall effect is a site that is fast, visually interesting and fun to interact with.

Small screen, big impact.

Of course, the limited screen space of mobile devices provided an additional challenge when building a website where interacting with large, detailed maps was the key focus. Developers implemented a toggle to allow users on phones to easily switch between viewing content and interactive maps. This means that regardless of device used, users can have the same, feature rich, interactive experience.

All in.

All major transportation groups, including the City of Bend, Cascades East Transit, the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization, and even Bend’s Park and Recreation District are updating their plans. With millions on the table, MOVE BEND’s mission is to include the public in the decision of how those dollars should be spent.
